It has long been one of our most loved records, and we are proud to be working with a bunch of incredible artists celebrating Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds’ classic album ‘Murder Ballads’ at the Brisbane Powerhouse.

Australian artist Nick Cave has created a body of work like few others. Along with his long time band The Bad Seeds Cave has carved out a reputation as a truly unique creative voice. But for many fans, there was no higher point than the 1996 album ‘MURDER BALLADS’.

And to mark the 20th anniversary of the album’s release, an impressive collection of Brisbane artists will be coming together on November 24 to re-create the album in its entirety as part of the WONDERLAND FESTIVAL at Brisbane Powerhouse.

The album celebrates the enduring genre of murder ballads, often brutal and bloodthirsty tales that bring to life crimes of passion. In producing the record, Cave not only penned his own songs but re-interpreted traditional murder ballads that have become a powerful chapter in the evolution of music. With songs including ‘Stagger Lee’, ‘Where The Wild Roses Grow, and ‘Henry Lee’ the album became an instant classic loved the world over for its wild passion and seductive dark side.Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds - 'Murder Ballads'

Arguably the most critically acclaimed record of Nick Cave’s career, the album also featured what many consider the definitive Bad Seeds line up including Nick Cave, Blixa Bargeld, Martyn P. Casey, Mick Harvey, Conway Savage, Jim Sclavunos, Thomas Wydler and Warren Ellis.

What made the record even more remarkable was the collection of guests including Kylie Minogue, PJ Harvey, Shane MacGowan and Hugo Race. In fact, is was Cave’s brutally dark duet with Kylie Minogue – ‘Where The Wild Roses Grow, – that opened up a huge new global audience for an artist that has long relished working on the fringes of the mainstream.

Taking on the task of recreating the album will be a group of Brisbane finest musicians including Jeff Lovejoy, Parmis Rose, Chris and Terry Dixon and a rotating cast of guest vocalists featuring Jackie Marshall, Deb Suckling and the stunning voice of Indian born newcomer Avi Misra – with many more to be announced soon.

Poetic, powerful, passionate – this is a collection of songs that belongs on stage.
